DATA AND TECHNOLOGY: Implementing a Citywide Wireless

Question/Comment: Is the City considering offering wireless internet?

City Update 9/23/2009: The project is indefinitely on hold for a few reasons. First, technology is changing quickly, making it risky for either the City or a private partner to invest in an expensive infrastructure. Second, even with citywide wireless, service does not reach into buildings. Thus, full wireless access would require additional investment at the household level. Finally, it’s not clear that having wireless access resolves a technology divide since households still need access to computers or other wireless devices to access the internet.

City Update 1/26/2009: An RFI for municipal wi-fi was issued, but interest was slow. The City applied for federal infrastructure funds for the project as well.
