DATA & TECHNOLOGY: Google high-speed network

Question/Comment: A resident suggested that the City lobby for Google's fiber to the home network to be piloted in Somerville. S/he thinks that having this network would make Somerville an even more attractive place to live!

City update 3/18/10: You can help Somerville win the opportunity to pilot Google's high-speed network!  The network, said by Google to "deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today," will be offered at only a small number of trial locations across the country. Google is asking local residents to express their interest in a trial in their community. Your support will strengthen Somerville’s case to be included in the pilot.  Click here to help make a case for Somerville.

City Update 2/23/10: Mayor Curtatone recently announced that the City of Somerville will seek to be included as one of the selected trial areas for an ultra-high speed broadband network by Google.  The network will be offered at a competitive price in selected trial locations nationwide. The City believes that Somerville's location and demographics make us an ideal candidate for a trial of this nature.  With Google's plan, a fiber-optic broadband network would provide an attractive choice for the residents of Somerville. The City will be submitting a Request for Information (RFI) to Google, which they are using to identify interested communities.  Google will build and test ultra-high speed broadband networks, which will offer Internet speeds of 1 gigabit per second and should ultimately increase competition, and lower prices.  Click here for more information on the City's plans for the RFI.
