Zero New Washington

Hello Friends and Neighbors,
Please join us this Saturday, November 20, 2010, at 10:00 am, for the opening celebration of Somerville's newest Community Park and Off Leash Recreation Area at Zero New Washington Street, located one block behind the Holiday Inn at the intersection of New Washington Street and Inner Belt Road.

We are particularly proud of this recent addition to the City's park network. Prior to the renovation, the park was a narrow strip of vacant and undesirable industrial land between the rail corridor and New Washington Street. Now, with the completion of construction, this area has been converted to over 20,000 square feet of valuable new public open space.

The design includes a landscaped community space at the eastern end of the site where visitors and neighbors can relax, local employees can enjoy lunch, and parents can hold birthday parties for their children. Features include stone walls, a paved seating area with tables and chairs, and beautiful landscaping.

The new Off-Leash-Recreation Area is extensive and includes a large open and fenced in area for dogs to run, a dog agility area with tunnels and climbing elements, drinking fountains with water dishes, benches, and a covered pavilion.

The park's design also incorporates over 50 new tree plantings, recycled granite curbing salvaged from the Somerville Avenue reconstruction, energy efficient LED lighting, new sidewalks, and 100% ADA accessibility.  The funding for the park was provided by the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Block Grant Program.
We hope you enjoy our new park and look forward to seeing you November 20th.
